Formula
How to convert time to decimal hours
Decimal hours = hours + minutes ÷ 60 + seconds ÷ 3,600
8 hours 30 minutes equals 8.5 decimal hours: 8 + 30 ÷ 60 = 8.5. A duration of 8.30 decimal hours equals 8 hours 18 minutes, because 0.30 × 60 = 18.
To reverse the conversion, multiply decimal hours by 3,600 to get total seconds, then divide that duration into hours, minutes, and seconds. For example, 7.75 hours equals 7 hours 45 minutes.

Common questions
Reading your result
Is 8:30 the same as 8.30 hours?
No. 8:30 is eight hours and thirty minutes. 8.30 decimal hours is eight hours and eighteen minutes. Choose the input mode that matches your timesheet.
Does this calculate clock-in and clock-out times?
This tool converts durations you already know. It does not subtract clock times, apply breaks, or decide which hours are paid. Durations over 24 hours remain durations; they do not wrap to the next day.
Why can a total differ from the sum of rounded rows?
Three one-minute entries total 0.05 hours. Rounding each entry to 0.02 before adding would give 0.06. This calculator adds the original values first, then rounds the total. Exported decimals use the precision you select.
