8 hour shift calculator

What time should you clock out? Enter when you start, choose your target hours, and add your breaks. Use the same calculator for 4, 6, 10, or 12-hour shifts, or time still to work today.

Plan your finish time

Use 8:00 for eight hours, or 7:30 for seven and a half. Maximum 24:00.

Already worked part of the shift?

Enter time already counted toward your target, including any counted breaks. Set the start / resume time to when your remaining work begins. Add only breaks still to come below.

Remaining breaks

Unchecked breaks extend your finish time. Check a break only if it counts toward your target.

Up to eight breaks, each from 0 to 240 minutes.

All calculations run in your browser. Break settings describe your schedule; they do not determine pay or break entitlement. This uses wall-clock time and assumes no daylight-saving or time-zone change during the shift.

Method

How to calculate your clock-out time

Finish = start / resume time + target remaining + breaks outside the target

Starting at 08:00 with an eight-hour target and a 30-minute break outside that target gives 16:30, or 4:30 PM. If the same break counts toward the eight hours, the finish time is 16:00.

The calculation uses whole minutes. Breaks counted toward the target are already inside its duration, so they are not added twice. Passing midnight shows the next day, or the number of days later.

Examples

Eight-hour shifts with a 30-minute extra break

All 30-minute breaks in this table are outside the target. Times use a 24-hour clock.

Common questions

Plan the rest of your workday

Does an eight-hour shift include lunch?

That depends on what your target represents. A break outside the target extends your finish time. A break counted toward the target does not. Choose each break setting to match your schedule; this calculator does not decide whether a break is paid or legally required.

How do I calculate time remaining after a split shift?

Open the already-worked section and enter the time already counted toward your target. Use the start time of your next work session and list only future breaks. For example, after completing 3:00 toward an 8:00 target, resuming at 13:00 with a 30-minute extra break gives an 18:30 finish.

Can I use it for a night shift or a different shift length?

Yes. Use any target from one minute to 24 hours. The result labels the day when it crosses midnight. It assumes the clock does not change during the shift; dated shifts spanning daylight-saving changes need a calculation with the actual date and time zone.

How do I put the duration into a decimal timesheet?

Use the time to decimal calculator to convert a duration such as 8:30 to 8.5 hours. Enter the duration your timesheet requires; total time at work can include breaks that do not count as work.
